a building like a piece of ginger bread

At home, they bake the ginger bread and then "paint" it in funny colours. More or less like this building in Ljubljana. How about Hansel and Gretel?

Ljubljana, Slovenija: a little nostalgic

Thoughts were rolling faster than the wheels. Landscape unfolding in front of my eyes, covered with that special beginning-of-September light, triggered my memories. Signs of the past everywhere, so the verses of my childhood started chanting: "Pera iz solitera..." / Pera from the skyscaper, it was a little poem we used to like. And then we stopped and took a deep breath. In Ljubljana.I am not Slovenian by nationality, I belong a little bit more to the north-east (Serbia), but somehow, meeting this country, was meeting a part of me and my heritage.
Us, the ones born in this part of the world, we are blessed with a sort of nostalgia, that we carry with us everywhere we go. The coldness of the Alps cools it down a little, but only apparently, because from what I learned until now, Austrians themselves are a little nostalgic too...
Happy Thursday!

Ljubljana, Slovenija

When we arrived in Ljubljana (or Laibach, for the German language speakers) it was the first day of calendar autumn, a little bit nostalgic, but still very much warm and joyful. The first day of school filled the streets of the downtown with a noisy crowd, screaming from the top of their lungs "we are back, city, no more silence!". A colorful bunch, sometimes rude (is this agressivity a "must" for the teenagers?!), but nevertheless beautiful and fresh. A nice addition to an impressive city, and a factor that helped me feel less nostalgic about my lost Yugoslav roots.Happy Wednesday!

The Grossglockner glacier

Like a trip to the past, or to some other wonder world. A wonderful valey of ice, surrounded by green mountains. How amazing!

Plus, since today is Monday and we have to post some flowers, I'll give you a rather weird interpretation of the theme. Since very characteristic and traditional for Austria is the Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum), here is the Edelweisshuette, a wonderful place to stop on your way to the wonder in the picture above. A location as spectacular as the flower itself, which, unfortunatelly, is not so easy to be found from the bike :). Anyways, to my huge surprise to see the Edelweiss attached to some key chains or framed, to hang on the wall, my hubby explained that actually they grow the flower in the garden to be able to do that. Otherwise, the penalty is extremelly harsh, especially in a country like Austria, which puts a great effort into preserving its natural resources & environment.
Another tip: hehe, excellent food here at the Huette (the German word for "hut")!

A happy week ahead!

Grossglocknerstrasse: one of the best bike tours

We spent a week in Faak am See in Austria, so this was plenty of time to take most of our dream tours on bike. The Grossglockner was one of them, so on Sunday, August 31st, we saddled up and go. A place of unique beauty, with such clean air that you had the feeling it was made of crystal. Incredible scenery was unfolding in front of our eyes, waterfalls coming like out of nowhere create a mystical land under a bright sky, with only few sugar cotton clouds. For today's Sky Watch, here are the first three pictures from the Grossglockner series. The banner also belongs to this.Don't forget to check out more wonderful skies by clicking on the small Sky Watch banner above.
Also, to visit the official website of the Grossglockner, click on the banner or here.

Ferrari show Velden 2008

The holiday is over, the work is hard already, but this blog is a nice opportunity to go through all the pictures we've taken during the marvelous week in Faak am See and around.
On Saturday, 30th of August, we witnessed a great Ferrari parade. Not as great as the bike parade, but interesting nevertheless :).
Have a great Thursday!

That is so '60s of you :)!
These cars were featured on the chewing-gum wraping when I was a child... :).
