playful: Sibiu series

So, yes, I discovered photoshop :). Let's see how Sibiu/Hermannstadt looks in photoshop. I particularly like the dary brush and poster edges applied to this photos. This whole city is like a painting...
Leena, thanks for inspiring me to play with the images!

the eye

This is what I found in Piata Mare. Unusual wooden multimedia places. History lessons being displayed inside these things, on digital screens. Wonderful blend of carpentry and technology.

b & w rooftops no. 2

Another photo from Sibiu/Hermannstadt, a b & w again. Some of the most wonderful things to watch in Sibiu/Hermannstadt are the roofs. Thake a look here too.
Lots of photos from Sibiu/Hermannstadt and some other infos about Romanian lessons in Romania (Bucharest and Sibiu/Hermannstadt) here.

beautiful flags

Romanian flag in foreground, next to the one of the EU (cannot see it in the picture). Still some time till the National Day on December 1st, but the colours were too nice not to capture.

If you scroll down this page a little, you will see a stop-to-shop sign. This is the 'big picture', leading to the Bridge of Lies (Podul Minciunilor) in the background, another wonderful area in Sibiu. Constructed in 1859, this bridge, first named The Iron Bridge, was later nicknamed the Bridge of Lies. Legend has it that if a person tells a lie while standing on it, the iron structure will collapse.

Sibiu photos in different colours

I never use any kind of program to edit my photos. This time thou, I felt like playing. Adding a touch of vibrant colours to the rainy day.

Sibiu is one of the locations where during summer you can attend Romanian courses during the Romanian Summer Language School.

Have a great week!

propaganda

Funny how symbols of communism, once hated and despised, turn into real fashion icons with the time, and even funnier how they share the space with symbols of the "fierce capitalism" (see the Julius Meinl neon sign to the right). Although almost nobody speaks Russian nowadays in Romania (except for the professional translators and Russian ethnics maybe), one can see lots of Russian-like inscriptions everywhere: from the very popular red CCCP (i.e. USSR in EN) t-shirts, to pub names - like this one - Propaganda - in one of the hidden corners of the main pedestrian area in Sibiu. After all, a hot tea tastes better in a trendy pub, doesn't it? Marketing is the best revenge :).

Clueless on what propaganda meant during the Cold War? Check it out here .
Clueless on what Julius Meinl is? You can find out more here .

stop to shop

Traces of colour in a grey and rainy Sibiu.

Stop to shop - inviting to a cosy shopping-for-souvenirs session, as Sibiu has caught the taste for such things. You can get everything: from fridge magnets, to bags and CDs, from clocks to coffee cups. No kitsch. Just souvenirs.

Have a great weekend!

modern Sibiu/ Hermannstadt

Really exhausting 24h business trip to Sibiu/Hermannstadt, but I've got fresh new captures. A little bit dark because of the heavy rain, but hope interesting nevertheless. This library I discovered while rambling round. Again, an expression of the Sibiu multiculturalism.
Some more from the European Capital of Culture 2007 soon.

Museums Quartier?!

An unshakeable feeling of "this smells like Vienna" was with us for the few hours that we visited Sibiu/Hermannstadt. These MuseumsQuartier-like benches added to that. Anyways, from what we've been told, Austrian money helped to the renovation of Sibiu. One could tell that from the STRABAG signs present everywhere in the city.
